Time Machine not working after Sierra update

The time machine function of my Mackbook Air 2011 stopped working...it has not backed up since updating to Sierra, all it does is take hourly screen shots, it will no longer back up to my external hard drive like it used to.

There is no problem with how it is set up or the hard drive it's self as my iMac is working perfectly fine since updating to Sierra and it is backing up via time machine to the same hard drive.

This is a hard drive and set up i have had in use for about 5 years with no problems.

Also since updating to Sierra i noticed my MacBook Air gets hot and the fans run wild even though there was nothing one or running other than the system it's self.

I lost use of my built in camera after updating to El Capitan and now i have lost the use of time machine...wondering if i should go back to Yosemite as everything worked fine then!..is this possible?

Thanks for any help with all this!

Update:- Just so ya know, time machine is finding the back up disk ok (external hard drive), it then goes to 'preparing backup' and that's it, it stays in this preparing back up stage for ages, after a while it just stops and that's that...nothing backed up!

Also noticed when i checked in Time Machine that the full back up i did prior to updating to Sierra has gone, it's disappeared, been erased...i don't know what's going on with it!

All in all since updating to Sierra my MacBook Air has not functioned properly, on top of all this Safari won't load, just get the spinning wheel, and now it seems (with the disappearance of my old back ups) i cannot go back to a previous state!

My Mackbook Air has had it!...the last update took the camera and Sierra has really done it in...hardware not compatible with all the new software, none of the new functions work on my iMac or MacBook Air (only Siri), so pointless update for me really, wish i hadn't! 😟

I’m running Sierra on a 2011 MBA and a late 2012 iMac without any issues at all. You’ve addressed quite a few problems but they don’t point to a computer incapable of running Sierra well. I think my MBA runs Sierra better than it did El Capitan. (And I was happy with El Cap.)

I suggest that you do two things and come back. First, restart in Safe Mode (restart and hold the Shift key until you see the Apple icon). The computer will start slower than normal so be patient. This will check your disk directory and trim/delete caches. After the boot finishes, restart normally and download EtreCheck a program created by an active participant here. It will create a list of information you can paste into a message here and that will help us see what software you have. It could be you need to remove or update something.

Sep 23, 2016 10:22 AM in response to dwb

Will do and just to add another update...i have just noticed i no longer have bluetooth on the MBA...the icon is now greyed out with a zig zag line through it and if i click on it there's a message saying 'bluetooth not available', the last time i started the MBA up i had to go through the log process about 4 times, it kept logging me out.

Sep 23, 2016 10:49 AM in response to dwb

After restarting in safe mode then again normally i have Bluetooth back but safari will not load (having to work from iMac sharing my MBA screen), also here is EtreCheck report of MBA as asked to do.

Uninstall Sophos. It is essentially useless and even if you need it you should wait for a Sierra updated version. You have a second anti-malware program: Trusteer Rappaport. Uninstall it too. Important: don't just delete the apps - go online and find uninstall instructions at their websites or download uninstallers.

You also have a huge number of things not launched due to insufficient RAM. This could be a source of your problems, then again much of your issues could disappear by uninstalling the two programs. MDWorker is a process running hard - that's the Spotlight indexer. I think removing of the anti-malware may solve your Safari problems but if not, come back. There's obviously a lot going on with Webkit - that's Safari - but why I don't know at the moment.

Ok, uninstalled Sophos and Rapport then ran Etrecheck again (new report below), Safari seems to be better as you expected, loaded quickly.

Ok, not sure what's changed since removing those earlier items but i have finally managed to do a back up via time machine and the back i did prior to updating to Sierra has re-appeared!

Safari still loading ok.

The whole system just seems very unsettled though, odd little things stop working then work again...sharing option on safari greyed out then back online, backing up iPhone told it couldn't back up as no space left on comp (there was plenty space), then it backed up phone and iPad no problem, bluetooth disappeared then came back!

Still no sign of getting my camera back though, still says there's no camera available, even says that in the system information!

Glad to see you are getting closer. Alan is right. just download Sierra again and install it. You can always reinstall the same version currently installed which will replace all the files including some that were damaged.

I am concerned about all the diagnostic messages about webkit so after you do the reinstall run EtreCheck again to see if they go away.
